It is home to the Shaldon Wildlife Trust and is known as ‘the small zoo making a big difference’. They are the smallest zoological collection in the UK and have just three full time members of staff, but size doesn’t get in their way! Shaldon supports conservation projects across the world and is home to some of the most rare and endangered animals on the planet.
As you follow the pathway that weaves through the woodland you will encounter some of the most astonishing animal species, like mouse deer, tree shrews, the pygmy slow lorries and even the world’s tiniest primate, the mouse lemur. Shaldon are also one of only five zoos in the world to care for the Owston’s Palm civet outside of its native home in Vietnam. Set on the gentle slope of a coastal hillside, you will be transported to the fertile forests and enchanted treetops which the species they care for call home.
